Remembering Bill Callihan

William “Bill” Wylie Callihan, a cherished figure in the community, passed away on July 15, 2024, at the age of 89. His life was a testament to the values of family, faith, and community involvement, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Bill was born on April 2, 1935, in Carter County, Kentucky, to Elmer and Ida Mae Lowe Callihan. From a young age, Bill’s character was shaped by the values of hard work and dedication, which he carried throughout his life. He proudly served his country in the Army National Guard for 24 years and had a long and successful career with General Refractories Company, from which he retired.

Bill’s commitment to his community was evident in his involvement with several local organizations. He was an active member of the Olive Hill Historical Society, playing a crucial role in saving the historic Olive Hill High School. Even after the organization evolved into the Olive Hill Center for Arts & Heritage, Bill continued to serve with dedication, ensuring the preservation of this community treasure. Alongside his friend Bill “Peanut” Stephens, he took on various maintenance tasks to keep the historic school in good condition.

Bill was also involved with the Carter County Shrine Club, the Olive Hill Methodist Church, and the planning and zoning commission, contributing his time and expertise to make his community a better place. His deep faith and commitment to service were reflected in all aspects of his life.

In addition to his professional and community endeavors, Bill had a rich personal life filled with hobbies and passions. He enjoyed working on clocks, playing golf, and spending time with his family and loved ones, often sharing stories that brought joy and laughter. His home was always filled with warmth and hospitality, making everyone feel welcome and valued.

Family was at the heart of Bill’s world. He shared 63 wonderful years with his loving wife, Jackie Kerns Callihan. Together, they raised their children and were blessed with grandchildren who adored their “Papaw.” Bill’s family, including his son Jarrod Wylie (Lara Bell) Callihan, and grandchildren Andrew (Abbey) Williams and Hannah Williams (Clay) Sivils, were the center of his life. He also shared a special bond with his brother, Lloyd Thomas (Alberta) Callihan, and cherished the time spent with his extended family and friends.

As we remember Bill Callihan, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man who made a profound impact on those fortunate enough to know him. His legacy of love, faith, and community service continues to inspire us.

Bill Callihan’s life was a blessing, and his memory will forever be a treasure.
